We are preparing for our 2015 season and we invite you to participate with us this year! All you need is a 4WD or AWD vehicle, a valid Driver's License and a small registration fee. We have classes for all levels of drivers. Ice racing is fun, safe and a great way to enjoy your 4x4 during the winter months. If you'd rather watch, remember that spectators are always free! Our racing is unique and our one-of-a-kind style shouldn't be missed. Either way our site is filled with information, so check us out!
NEWS & UPDATES:
Our 4th annual Dirt Drag Races are coming up on Saturday, July 4th! We are putting on these races as a part of the Town of Wellington’s 4th of July celebration. Funds raised will go towards the 2016 Ice Racing general fund.
To get to the ‘drag strip’ from the Wellington exit on I-25: Drive towards the town and head North on County Rd 7, and one block North of Washington Avenue, you will see the field and the crowd on your left.
We register all drivers AT THE EVENT. Registration will open at 10am and will remain open throughout the early afternoon. Class registration will close 20 minutes prior to the start of the class. If you plan on running the Outlaw class, please fill this quick form out, so we can get an idea on how many to expect. Please bring cash to pay your fees, be prepared to sign a waiver, show your Driver’s License, show a current proof of insurance and get your vehicle through a quick safety inspection. More on vehicles and safety below.
Cash Only please. Each event is $20 per driver per event. You can enter multiple events, if your vehicle meets the requirements. If time allows at the end of the day, we will also do grudge matches, which will be $10 each. Spectators are free.
We will have 6 trophy events this year and grudge matches at the end if we have time. Grudge matches are a chance to race your friends (or frenemies) heads up. Each driver puts up a $10 entry fee, winner of the heat gets their $10 back. Classes are below and we PLAN to run them in this order (with the exception of Outlaw which will run a bit throughout the day):
- 4 Wheel Drive Diesel
- 2 Wheel Drive Street (gas and diesel combined)
- 4 Wheel Drive Gas Street (4 cyl and 6 cyl)
- Other (motorcycles, quads, ATVs and UTVs)
- 4 Wheel Drive Gas Modified Street (8+ cyl, turbo charged, supercharged)
- Outlaw (highly modified, non street legal vehicles)
Tech Inspection, Safety & Vehicles
ALL DRIVERS MUST HAVE A HELMET TO PARTICIPATE. We have a limited number of helmets for rent on a first come – first served basis. We will also be looking over vehicles in a quick safety inspection and to place them in classes. We’re looking for things like operable brakes; good return on the throttle; parts are in good condition and not hanging down or unbolted (steering components, electrical wires, fuel lines); seat belts present and in good, working condition; no leaks; etc. If you have a specific question, you can call Joe Huffaker at 970-222-3836. We are also happy to discuss classifications and special cases where you have good, sound reasoning.
Race order is determined by a blind number draw. Drag race heats are side by side with a flag drop start and first to the finish wins the heat. Class brackets are double elimination, so for each $20 entry you are guaranteed 2 runs. 1st and 2nd in each class will get trophies. Grudge matches are 1 run per pairing, winner keeps their cash. There will be no practice, so we can maintain a good racing surface for all classes.
Although the races are in a field, it’s usually dry and easy to drive through. There is a pit area with room to park trucks and trailers away from spectators. Drag lanes are graded and packed down to provide more traction and a smooth racing surface.
1 adult passenger will be allowed in the Street Legal entries, but they must have a helmet and appropriate seat and seat belt. NO passengers will be allowed in the Outlaw or Other classes. We reserve the right to allow or disallow passengers as we see fit for safety reasons.
Other events in Wellington
There are a lot of other events going on in Wellington as well. Including a parade at 10am, a car show, a tractor pull and fireworks at dusk. See this website for more!
We can always use help flagging, there will be a sign up sheet circulating at the races. Anyone complaining about fairness of judging will be immediately signed up to work as Start/Finish judges! 😉
Our Gang Members please wear your orange volunteer shirts.
We will be doing track set up on Sunday, June 28th. They will be getting out the bleachers, setting up the fencing and starting the grading process. They’ll be starting early to beat the heat. We greatly appreciate any help, call Joe for details.
We will also have dinner after the races are over on the 4th. Kevin and Lucille will be cooking up the main course, please bring a side dish or dessert to share. Food will be $5 for any couple who volunteers and $10 for any couple who didn’t volunteer. (Kids are included in the couple price.) Fireworks begin at dusk and are done close to where we race, so pull up a chair for a great view!
Thank you for racing with us this season! Ice conditions caused us to cut the season short and because of that we missed some important events. Here’s the scoop on these events: We will not be having a banquet this year, however, we did call the points races as they stood after the final race on February 8th (winners are listed below). Points awards will be given out to our champs at another time, date will be announced after our April Our Gang Meeting. The Cheater Invitational will be run next season on the first weekend. Invitational qualifiers will stand as they were at the end of the season (see below). We will also run the Go for the Gold, Silver and Bronze the first weekend of 2016 as well. It will be a cool way to celebrate our 40th year of ice racing! We really appreciate our sponsors for all their support this year, please give them your business when you can. And finally, thank you so much to our Our Gang Officers, Lisa, Kevin, Jean and Andrea and our other Our Gang Members for all their hard work putting these events on. If we don’t see you at our Annual Rules Meeting in April (details below), we hope you’ll join us at our Dirt Drag Races in Wellington, CO on July 4th (details coming). We hope 2016 will be much colder temps and much more ice racing!
Congratulations to these people for qualifying for the 2015.5 Invitational, which will be run on the first Sunday of the 2016 season. You can click here to see the full bracket. (If anyone of these 16 drivers can’t make it, the next drivers in line may qualify for a run-off for their position.)
